February 2019

  1. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn – Mark Twain (70 of 220)

2956

2. Mythology – Edith Hamilton (70 of 330)

23522

3. The Strongest System – Xin Feng (376 pages this month) (translated novel)

With the start of the second semester, I wanted to really improve my reading habits because I was feeling pressure from AP ELA. I still had a massive improvement from last month due to exams, but I still feel a need for more improvement. Additionally, most of my reading came from required reading.

Ratings:

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn – Mark Twain Image result for gold star rating iconImage result for gold star rating iconImage result for gold star rating iconImage result for gold star rating icon

With up to what I have read, Huckleberry Finn has been a few adventures and has also shown his lifestyle and how much he dislikes it because it is too boring for him. Since he wants to get away from his daily lifestyle he dares to take risks and will go through dangerous endeavours. Also, Huck finds people that also go through struggles similar to his own and he forms bonds of friendship with them.

I have only read around half of the book and the beginning was dry, but now, it is great. I found quite a few moments where I was stuck to the book and could feel a connection to the book. Furthermore, Huck’s character development is amazing and Huck has also reflected some traits of my own. The overall plot – although hard to discuss now – is building up and I can feel something is about to happen.

Mythology – Edith Hamilton Image result for gold star rating iconImage result for gold star rating iconImage result for gold star rating icon

This was the book I had to read for ELA. Mythology is a series of poems and epics of Greek and Roman times written in an easier to read format. The stories delve into the human condition and show how over time humans have not changed and still have similar traits. Stories that I read include How the World and Mankind were Created, The Trojan War, The Adventures of Odysseus, The Adventures of Aeneas, and The Norse Gods. Out of all of these stories, the best one, in my opinion, is The Adventures of Odysseus.

The book overall received three stars from me because I didn’t really feel a connection or relation to the stories except for The Adventures of Odysseus. This story in specific had heart-wrenching parts and I felt a connection of Odysseus. He had so many trials and tribulations which led him to not see his family for 20 years. The plot of the story was amazing because it made Odysseus and his family a very likeable character because he was given great traits. This is why the book was given a three-star rating.

The Strongest System is about a boy named Lin Fan in a brand new world but is in possession of a system. In the new world, Lin Fan quickly realizes that only might is right. Lin Fan with his system is already destined to become the strongest person in the world since the system allows him to break the limitation barriers of the world granting him limitless potential. Although this is true, Lin Fan doesn’t just want to be the strongest, he wants everyone to know it.

This novel has many different qualities that allow it to receive four stars. For starters, Lin Fan is given an extremely different character than what I usually have seen. He is a shameless and a very leisure individual that still has strong will power. He loves to play around and treats life as a game. The overall plot of the book is entertaining because there are so many twists and the book will keep you guessing. What stopped this from getting a five star is that a few points of the novel become repetitive.

My total pages read: 516 pages

Pages/day : 18.4 pages/day

My goal for next month is to increase to 22 pages per day and also finish The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Also, I want to read some pages every day rather than not read some days and read more on other days. Also, I feel that picking up a candy book would be good so that I have a balance between the difficulty of my novel choices.

The month of February has been a decent month in terms of pages per day and I hope to achieve my goal of 22 pages per day next month.
